In April 2007 I was on tour this month with a special project on the Hendrix vibe called Gypsies Re-loaded.
The fantasic drummstress Cindy Blackman with her relentless energy and “Deep Melvin” Melvin Gibbs with the deep bottom groove Brooklyn style and of course me doing my strangle hold on the guitar neck for about 2 hrs a night (haha). We’ll be trying to stir up a storm… a chocolate storm I mean, every night possible. Hopefully the music will open up some doors that connect the mutual voodoo soul of my man Jimi to ours. Spirits never die.
The music will be an excursion on Hendrix motifs (from the Band of Gypsies) traveling through deep jam-band space.The Band of Gypsies repetoire is perfect for that. Its got abstact, blues, and a most importantly, a grounded funk-sphere that I love playing in. I will put it though the Bourelly-Blender and bang! … And hopefully something wonderously crazy will come out…

about Cindy…
Cindy has been touted as “one of the hottest drummers in the business”, by the Star-Gazette and is regarded as one of the top drummers in the world. She is a solid, dependable drummer who can easily move from straight-ahead jazz to rock to funk and back again. She’s upheld the backbeat and created texture for a veritable “Who’s Who” in jazz: Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Don Pullen, Hugh Masekela, Pharaoh Sanders, Sam Rivers, Cassandra Wilson, Angela Bofill, Bill Laswell, Buckethead.
about Melvin…
He first came to public notice as a member of the groups Defunkt and the Decoding Society who were mainstays of the in the early ’80’s downtown N.Y. scene. (side note- Melvin was also the bassist for the Contortions/ James White and the Blacks/ Flaming Demonics and appears in the video of the Contortions show which features Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie) where he worked alongside his neighborhood pal Vernon Reid. He also re-connected musically with Alphonia Tims, had who become the protégé of Ornette Coleman and later became the protégé of the late Gil Evans, allowing Melvin the opportunity to be mentored by both of these jazz greats. He also worked with artists such as the seminal guitarist Sonny Sharrock, saxophonist/composer John Zorn and avant-pop group the Ambitious Lovers. He recorded several critically acclaimed records during the nineties with Jean-Paul Bourelly and later toured with speed metal rocker/poet Henry Rollins.

The acclaimed guitartist/producer started recording as a solo artists with Jungle Cowboy (Jmt 1988) and has worked his way through 12 more releases since then. He has recorded with some of the greats in the jazz world: Miles Davis, Elvin Jones and Pharoah Sanders. His guitar sound is dramatic and original, enriched by the sound of blues, (from his native Chicago) and the west African rhythmic precision (of his HaItian background). His ability to whip an organic frenzy within a wide variety of musics is well know. His is as comfortable performing with artists as varied as Dou Dou N’Diaye Rose (Senegal) as he is with mradungum Master Palgut Ragu (Madras). Using funk as the common thread, its still hard to categories this flexible style other than to say “its a Bourelly vibe”.

Als unermüdlicher Pendler zwischen Tradition, Mainstream, Avantgarde und Rock ist JEAN-PAUL BOURELLY ein Titan, dessen heimliche Herrschaft über den Gitarren-Olymp heute immer mehr Leute bemerkt haben. In seiner Discographie tauchen Namen auf wie Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Defunkt, Cassandra Wilson und die JB Horns. Bourellys schwerer Ton verweist auf seine Wurzeln: Chicago. Ein Teil seiner selbst scheint jedoch eine tiefe Verbindung mit Jimi Hendrix eingegangen zu sein. Trotzdem gehört er nicht zu den vielen Hendrix-Epigonen, sondern reichert dessen Erbe durch HipHop, Funk, Hardrock und Jazz an und macht daraus sein Markenzeichen: brodelnd-groovenden Jungle World Blues. Völlig zu Recht nennt man ihn daher den “Jimi Hendrix des neuen Jahrtausends”.
Seit zehn Jahren verlässt sich Lenny Kravitz auf das rhythmische Fundament von CINDY BLACKMAN, in allen Videos des Popstars ist sie Blickfang und groovendes Herz zugleich. Wenn sie mal nicht mit dem Kravitz die großen Hallen rockt, tritt sie als Bandleaderin verschiedener Jazzrock-Projekte auf. In diesem Jahr ist sie sehr kurzfristig für die Tour-Band von Lenny Kravitz verpflichtet worden und kann leider bei „Band of Gypsys-Reloaded“ nicht dabei sein. Kein Geringerer, als Grant Calvin Weston wird ihren Platz einnehmen und damit sein Debüt im „A-Trane“ geben. Bereits im Alter von 17 Jahren gab es eine Begegnung mit Ornette Coleman´s Prime Time Band, mit denen er durch Nord Amerika und Europa tourte und an 4 Alben der Prime Time Band beteiligt war. Anschließend folgten Engagements bei James Blood Ulmer und 1990 eine Zusammenarbeit mit John Lurie´s Lounge Lizards. Des Weiteren folgten Touren und Plattenaufnahmen mit Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin &Wood), Tricky, Derek Bailey, Mark Ribot und James Carter, wirkte am u.a. an den Soundtracks für „Get Shorty“ und „Blue In The Face“ mit und startete sein erstes eigenes Bandprojekt „ Calvin Weston´s Big Three“, als eine Plattform um die eigenen Erfahrungen und musikalische Einflüsse seiner bisherigen Laufbahn zusammenzufassen.
MELVIN GIBBS ist von Time Out New York „der beste Bassist der Welt“ genannt worden. Als hoch angesehener Vertreter der New Yorker Musikszene hat er sein einzigartiges Talent an der Seite zahlreicher Größen der unterschiedlichsten Genres bewiesen, auf nahezu 200 Alben ist er zu hören. Er war Mitglied von Defunkt, Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society, der Rollins Band und spielte an der Seite von Arto Lindsay, Bill Frisell, David Murray, Sonny Sharrock, Elliott Sharp, John Zorn, David Byrne u.v.a.m. Dieses Power-Trio sorgt mit Sicherheit für eines der heißesten Zusammentreffen von Funk, Heavy Rock und JazzFusion.
